PH2021 NPO Projects

We are proud to be working with these amazing Nonprofit Organizations (2 Spirits in Motion Society, Agir Montréal, AlterHéros, BELI-Black Executive Leadership Initiative, Egale Canada, Fête Arc-en-Ciel Québec, Interligne, Ontario Digital Literacy and Access Network, Rainbow Faith and Freedom, TransEstrie, Trans Mauricie-Centre-du-Québec) on their technology projects for PrideHacks 2021 Virtual! Serving 2SLGBTQ+ communities across Canada, this will be our widest reaching PrideHacks ever.

We need your help!

To build technology for a stronger community takes a village and we need your help with these great projects this year. Take a look below to learn more about each organization, the projects they need help with and the skills that would be helpful for each. Don't worry if your skill set doesn't quite match, every project needs assistance in copy writing, presentation creation, and general communication skills and more.

PrideHacks is an inclusive environment, whether you are Ally/Straight or LGBTQ2S+ - all genders and sexual identities are welcome, and we will be sure to make everyone feel at home.

AlterHéros

Project Description

Common platform for all LGBTQ+ volunteers of the AlterHéros’ program Ask your question! This program allows youth to ask questions related to sexual orientation, gender identity and sexual health on our website and get an answer from our outreach team. Currently we post the questions in a Facebook group or send them via email to volunteers, but we’d like an easier way to reach everyone at once. We have a peer support approach, so we’d like volunteers to be able to choose subjects they have lived experience about (eg: a trans volunteer could choose to only receive questions about gender and an asexual volunteer could choose to only receive questions about the grey-asexual spectrum).

Skills Needed

Front-end programming; CRM/CMS

Ontario Digital Literacy and Access Network

Project Description

We want to get devices into the hands of people who are deviceless. Digital access is a key barrier that older adults experience when accessing online platforms. We need to start hardware donation centers and get a team of tech savvy volunteers to refurbish the devices so they can be redistributed to 2S-LGBTQ+ community members who need them.

Skills Needed

Front-end programming; Database Management

Rainbow Faith and Freedom

Project Description

Since we work to end religious-based homo- and trans-phobia, we want to help people find safe, welcoming, inclusive congregations wherever they live in Canada, and whatever their faith. Right now, it's difficult for people to find this kind of information for places outside Canada's bigger cities. So we want to create a web resource that lists places all across Canada, particularly outside the bigger cities, that helps people find a place to worship and a faith community that will accept them AND their sexual and gender orientation and identity.

Skills Needed

Squarespace specialist; web developer; front-end programming; JavaScript,

TransEstrie

Project Description

We are trying to find a way to efficiently handle the inventory of our gender affirming items (binders, packers, gaffs, etc), our book collection and personalized user commands. We buy or receive donations of gender affirming items and give them back under a “pay what you can” system. We have an inventory management program, but despite great efforts, it is still misunderstood by most of the team, and so the gender affirming items stock isn’t kept up to date. We always need a lot of energy to count everything back directly, and retrace transactions lost in the system. Our gender affirming items resource is used to provide trans, non-binary and questioning people with access to items to decrease their dysphoria at no cost. We function under a “pay what you can'' system and finance it with personal donations and rare grants from government or charity organizations. We have been seeking to automate the management of its inventory for a while, at no avail. We mainly seek to improve how we handle this resource. A lot of people ask for gender affirming items, and the inventory changes quickly, so we want to be able to handle these demands in the simplest way possible for us AND them.

Skills Needed

Wordpress skills; Content import; Front-end developpers; expertise with PHP and CSV datafiles
