About the Role :
The Engineering team is part of the Development department led by CPO Gabriel Damant-Sirois. As the Head of Engineering you will be responsible for building a world-class engineering team, ready to handle the needs of the biggest real estate companies on the planet. We’re looking for someone who will design the team based on the company needs, and recruit and guide its members. You will empower engineers to be autonomous in their decision making and always ready to help them find the best solutions to the challenges we’re facing. The Head of Engineering is also responsible for making sure that the highest quality standards are applied when needed, ensuring the team goes fast when testing new ideas, but that rigorous coding standards are respected. As Head of Engineering, you know how to prioritize in a constantly evolving work environment, when to compromise, and how to build robust systems that are scalable and flexible.
Here’s some of the day to day work you’ll be doing as a Head of Engineering at Local Logic:
- Guide the hiring & onboarding process for all engineering candidates
- Set guidelines and best practices for engineers
- Scope new projects with Product Manager and team members
- Mentor fellow team members and support others in their growth plan
- Focus on building a world-class engineering culture and help us move towards a work from anywhere culture
- Write technical grant applications
About you
We’re looking for someone who has hired, managed and led a group of engineers in a startup environment with contributors working remotely. You are able to bring the best out of your team members and help them grow to their full potential. You’re great at giving direction, have strong communication skills, and look to give autonomy to your team for them to contribute to the best solution. You see yourself more as a “servant-leader” than a manager. Therefore, you need to have empathy towards the challenges faced by engineers working in a fast-paced startup environment.
You have built and deployed in a cloud infrastructure ETL pipelines that could handle massive amounts of data from multiple sources, integrate models, and distribute the outputs in an efficient and flexible way. You have an excellent understanding of Python and Javascript, and understand how web development works.
Experience working with big data tools like Redshift, Hadoop, Spark, and with geospatial data using ESRI products’ suite would be a nice to have. Another additional asset would be experience in writing technical grant applications as well as R&D credits.
The ideal candidate for this role has experience managing remote teams. Ideally, you are based in Montreal, or willing to relocate.
Local Logic is passionate about growth and we don’t expect you to know it all right out of the gate. We care that you have mastered the fundamentals for your level of experience, and still have a keen desire to grow professionally, learn new things, and strive to do your best work always.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, our team is currently working 100% remotely and will continue to do so until such time as the government regulations indicate it is safe for us to return to any kind of in-person workspace.
In 2020-2021, Local Logic is transitioning to a flexwork model. This means we will be a remote-centric company with access to a physical community hub in our home city of Montreal for in-person interactions. This innovative work structure will offer employees the option to work remotely, while maintaining the flexibility and space that Local Logic has always given employees to be human first, while maintaining the valuable in-person ties to our team and to the Montreal community that are at the core of Local Logic.
The Local Logic team are a group of driven, growth minded individuals - we value people who take initiative, try new things, and live to learn. We like to debate ideas, from the tough decisions to the “is it a sandwich?” debate that seems to grip us at least once a quarter. We are here to support and inspire one another, and to continue to push our collective work to the next level.
Pay and Benefits
Local Logic is proud to offer a comprehensive benefits package to its employees. We offer all full time employees a great health insurance plan, which includes $1500 annual coverage for paramedical services like massage, acupuncture, nutrition, and naturopathy. We care about our employees’ health, so we cover 100% of premiums for our employees. Additionally, Local Logic covers the cost of membership to Dialogue, a telemedicine service for our employees and their family members.
We also provide employees with a $250 discretionary health and wellness credit. In that past, employees have used this credit to purchase everything from noise cancelling headphones to fitness watches or yoga memberships!
To support our company value of being Growth Oriented, employees are given a $500 annual professional development credit, as well as 8 hours of professional development time per month. Take the time to develop a new skill, read up on the industry, attend a workshop or conference, or take a short course!
